What is happening today

Today, September 14, 2026, marks a historic turning point for African capital markets. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, owner and operator of the largest oil refinery in Africa, officially opens its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). The offer is set to run until October 13, 2026, with trading expected to begin in November.

This is the first refinery in Nigerian history to be listed for public subscription on the NGX in the Exchange's 66-year history. When trading begins, the event is expected to push NGX's total market capitalisation past ₦200 trillion for the first time.

Why the Dangote Refinery matters

Built in Lekki, Lagos, the Dangote Refinery is the world's largest single-train oil refinery, with a crude oil processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, recently upgraded to 700,000 barrels per day. For decades, Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer, paradoxically imported most of its refined fuel. The Dangote Refinery is changing that.

By mid-2026, the refinery is supplying roughly 80% of Nigeria's domestic gasoline demand and operating at 99.4% capacity utilisation. Nigeria's fuel import bill, which once cost $14 billion a year in foreign exchange, has already fallen to $10 billion and is expected to continue declining.

Beyond Nigeria, the refinery has transformed West African fuel markets. Seaborne petroleum product exports from Nigeria have grown sevenfold since 2023, with exports reaching Europe, other African nations, and global markets. At $27 billion in projected annual revenue, it is one of the largest industrial businesses on the continent.

Africa's biggest IPO, and what it signals

This IPO is shaping up to be the largest in African history by proceeds. The scale of investor interest is remarkable: Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest person, is targeting as many as 10 million individual shareholders, from Nigeria's wealthiest tycoons to university students opening investment accounts for the first time.

Supporters argue the listing is more than a fundraising exercise, it is a statement about Africa's ability to finance, own, and operate world-class industrial infrastructure. As Dangote himself put it: "This listing will democratise Africa's industrial prosperity."

The IPO also comes with an overallotment option: if demand exceeds supply, Dangote can issue up to 30% more shares, potentially pushing the total raise above $2.1 billion.

What to watch as an investor

The opportunity is real, but so are the risks. Only about 3.3% of the company is being offered, meaning the Dangote Group retains firm control. A small float can lead to volatile price swings after listing, demand is high, but tradeable shares are limited.

Investors should also factor in the naira's ongoing volatility, regulatory risk in Nigeria's energy sector, and the fact that the refinery's revenues are largely denominated in US dollars while many costs (and the IPO price) are in naira. Currency movements will directly affect returns for foreign investors.

That said, the refinery has a $14.3 billion expansion plan to double capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day, which would make it the largest refinery in the world by any measure. For long-term believers in African industrialisation, this is the clearest opportunity in a generation.

How to participate

The minimum subscription is 10 shares at ₦525 each, a total of ₦5,250. Above that, subscriptions run in multiples of 50 shares. Applications can be submitted through licensed stockbrokers, registered financial advisors, and online brokerage platforms on the NGX. The offer closes on October 13, 2026.

As an Amarah user, you currently invest in US-listed stocks. The Dangote IPO is listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), not a US exchange, so it is not directly available through Amarah at this time. However, understanding major African capital market events like this one is core to becoming a confident global investor.

The bottom line

The Dangote Refinery IPO is not just a stock market event, it is a signal about where African economies are heading. Whether you invest directly or not, today's opening marks a new chapter for African capital markets, one where the continent is beginning to fund its own industrial future from within.
